THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is a time for celebration in acknowledgement of the blessings that are ours - particularly in terms of life's temporal benefits. It is fitting that we do so.

For the believer, however, thanksgiving extends to the larger dimension as well. Indeed, the apostle Paul perceives a grateful spirit as essential to meaningful faith and experience (Rom. 1:21). As such it characterized his own life, even in difficult times. Hence his giving of thanks for "God's unspeakable gift" (II Cor. 9:15) and its consequent outworking in terms of fulfillment of calling (I Tim. 1:12); fruit of his labors (I Thess. 2:13); fellowship of other believers (Phil. 3-5), etc.

We too have much for which to be thankful. In my own life this would include God's touch on my life in many ways; a devoted spouse who has stood by me through times of test and trial; and loyal Christian friends such as the lady who prayed for us daily, even though her life had been devastated by an unfaithful husband and ravaging neurological disease that ultimately and recently claimed her life.

And finally, as believers, what greater blessing could we all know than that of a heart inclined toward God - "drawn by the Father" (John 6:44) to the "fellowship of His Son" (I Cor. 1:9). Such is the greatest of all blessings.

Do have a joyous holiday!
