It had been a difficult day. Despite being the holiday season, the weight of church related responsibilities, family concerns, duties and demands of various sorts, etc., had essentially drained the spirit of joy and celebration. Compounding the general sense of frustration, an individual in need from some distance away had then called. Our presence was needed. As if an extension of the gloom, the night was itself cold and dark.
On our way we would pass a convenience store. A "caffeine lift" seem much in order. Upon entering the store we passed a young lady and small girl - unknown to myself, although I would later learn that the lady knew who I was. Smiling, the little girl said, "hello." Responding in kind, I then proceeded toward the coffee counter, only to be stopped by the words, "I love you." It was as though the very atmosphere changed. "I love you too," I replied and then inquired if she were ready for Christmas. She was indeed. At the lady's prompting, the girl then shared that this was her third birthday and politely thanked me for wishing her a happy birthday.
The evening had taken on an altogether tenor. It then struck home: 1) Was it not amazing what the words, "I love you," from even a small child, could effect and, 2) Was not this what Christmas was all about - that in sending His Son God was Himself saying, "I love you?" Despite the present pressures and concerns, it was indeed a season for joy.
Merry Christmas!
