TOGETHER IN SONG

Last evening we attended a "bluegrass Gospel" concert at an area church. While our own musical preferences might run in a slightly different direction, this is, after all, the South. Attendance was good as was also the public response and, indeed, spirit of the gathering. We enjoyed it.

Following the program and subsequent time of refreshment, we visited briefly with a couple we have come to know in somewhat recent times. While of a slightly differing tradition than our own, they are dedicated Christians. In addition to a certain involvement in Gospel music, the gentleman is now preparing for a career in the ministry. Alluding to those present from various churches in the community, he observed, "Isn't it good when we can just come together as Christians rather than as members of this or that church or denomination, and worship the Lord together in song?"

I am encouraged at the growth of this type spirit. It is more than just happenstance. God is doing a work among His people.

It brought to mind a visit we had just the evening before when practicing with a group of musicnas from another church. One of the participants shared concerning his parents who represent an out of state firm overseas. Having spent considerable time in Israel, he stated, they frequently speak of the sense of love and unity they have witnessed among Palestinian Christians. Those following Mid-eastern concerns need little be apprised as to the difficult circumstances in which these people often find themselves - a situation increasingly exacerbated by the present war and political tensions. Yet out of it all a growing sense of oneness and commitment to faith is seemingly finding expression.

We have often touched on the subject: In his last recorded prayer, Jesus prayed for unity among believers (John 17:21-23). Not only so, but in detailing divine objective in relation to the Church, the first attribute listed by the apostle Paul is "unity of the faith" (Eph. 4:11-13). It is more than mere idealism.

To what degree will the same dynamic whereby it would appear that God is at work among Palestinian Christians ultimately obtain here? We need to think about it.

And yes, it is good when we can get together, not as partisan sectarians, but rather fellow believers in Jesus Christ.
