ISRAEL, HEZBOLLAH AND THE MIDEAST

The Church has long been afflicted with "prophecy experts" who have it "all figured out." Indeed, one such "authority" is especially known for his claim to possess the answers to "everything you ever wanted to know about prophecy." Duly impressed, we assume that should the Lord in some way ever find himself short on details regarding pending or future realities, this individual is undoubtedly the source of enlightenment to whom He turns.

The focus of the world is presently centered upon the Mideast, not only in terms of the Iraq dilemma, but now the intense - and apparently intensifying - conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on the one hand and Gaza and Hamas on the other. As to where it all may lead within a more immediate context is, of course, yet unknown.

We do find it interesting, however, that some prominent figures, such as former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger are of the opinion that if Hezbollah is not now dealt with in a final and decisive manner, Western cause and initiative are likely to be lost in that part of the world. The picture is less than promising.

The prophet Daniel foresees an end time scenario in which evil world powers seek to destroy Israel (here referred to as "the holy people," Dan. ch. 12; note also apparently restored Jewish temple worship). Do present circumstances factor into the final, prophesied eventuality? Who is to say? At the same time, it is not difficult to see developments of such nature contributing to a growing dynamic in terms of both meaning and ultimate result.

Jesus spoke of "discerning the times" - i.e., not merely in terms of events, but also of trends and developments at work. We do well to remain alert, whatever the present outcome.
