"FISH CHRISTIANS"

We find the Christian fish symbol both intriguing and inspiring. As most are aware, the fish became a means of inconspicuous self-identification among believers at a time when open identity with the faith placed one at considerable risk. The symbol itself represented an acrostic derivative the Greek words for "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior" - thus ichthus or ichthys (i.e., "fish").

Much of the symbol's present appeal derives from its focus upon Christ and one's commitment to him - so transcending our sometimes more sectarian identity in terms of, "I am a Lutheran, Baptist, AOG..." or whatever.

Hence our attraction to the unobtrusive, yet tastefully presented, fish frequently seen on vehicles ahead of us at traffic stops and the like. We share the same identity: believers in Jesus Christ. It is a gratifying awareness.

Now, if we can just avoid somehow evolving into a new "fish denomination."
